Believers Biker Club

May 30, 2009 - Believers Presence at the Annual Chesapeake Bay Police Motorcycle Rodeo sponsored by the Portsmouth Police Department.

Saturday was a good day. In fact, it was a great day. It started out like most all other days, bright (well, I was sorta bright), early, and with an irritating alarm clock. Who ever invented those silly things anyway? I woke my bride and she hates early Saturdays with a passion, but today was different for both of us. This day we were making a different kind of impact with our hobby, motorcycling. We were going to share our faith and share our church. By the way, if you can find one, a common hobby for a married couple is very good thing!

After a few snooze smacks to the alarm, a quick shower, and some cereal, Jen and I motored off to church to meet Jamey (the lead pastor) and the rest of the Believers Bikers who wanted to come with us and give out water and invite cards to Believers Church. We met 4 other riders at 6:55am at church and just so you all know, Jamey was the man. He gave up driving his two wheels this day and drove his “cager” (biker nickname for car) so he could haul the water, ice, and coolers. It was going to be a good day. Right before we left, I noticed the sun just seemed to announce it’s presence with purpose this morning. As soon as it popped over the trees, the temp started to rise quickly and the jackets had to go. It was like God was saying, “Roll up your sleeves and let’s get down to business.”

We donned our gloves and helmets, fired ‘em up, and thundered off at about 7:15am to Wal-Mart on Frederick Blvd. ( where the old Midcity shopping center in Portsmouth used to be) for the Motorcycle Rodeo. I had never been to one of these before and honestly was not sure what I was about to experience. Rodeos, by my definition, are for horses, mud, cowboys, ropes, and big hats. Today, I didn’t have any of that stuff nor was I some wranglin’ cowboy. (although I do wear chaps when the air temp get too cold on the bike, yeah, I know… pretty scary huh? Oi, that’s a lot of leather there big boy. )

We rolled into the parking lot and dismounted our big V-twin steeds and prepared for a hot, humid, sunny day of sharing His presence with our presence.

The rodeo event was awesome. I watched the elite of our areas motorcycle cops as well as some from Henrico, VA and Charleston, SC strut their stuff on two wheels. They scraped, dragged, and sped their 800 pound mounts through twists, turns, and figure eights like I have never seen. At one point, they even “lassoed” two bikes together less than three feet apart and did figure 8’s around cones to show coordination and team work. They were just a few inches apart in turns and twists which would have meant a mess of mangled metal if just one mistake was made. It was really one of the coolest things I have ever seen. The Police raised $7000 dollars for the March of Dimes this day. They truly did a good thing.

There were just a few spectators around at first, but as the sun got higher, more and more peeps were coming in, and we were handing out water pretty fast. We met people of all kinds. Some were families who showed up in their cagers, but most were bikers just like us.  We gave out 100 waters and at least 100 invite cards that day. That’s 100 touches and who knows how many of those shared their experience of free water to their friends and family. There weren’t heavenly hosts singing and beams of light shining down on us for every water we gave out, but what we did see were faces of people who were very appreciative of just a little service of water and the fact the we cared enough to be there. Some took the water and ran from us, others stopped and chatted, and some even asked questions. We all even came together for one family who were having some rough times with medical bills and finances. We surrounded them, and prayed over them right there in the parking lot. It was a great showing of how His works are going to happen no matter where we are or what our plans are.

So here’s the real question for you, what are you doing to touch the lives of folks who may not know about Jesus and how His grace can save their lives? It doesn’t have to be a hard task. You can share at work, in your neighborhoods while chatting with your pals, or while doing your hobby.  If all that seems a little too hard, just give them an invite card and let them find out for themselves at one of Believers services.

Jamey, rack us up 100 touches please.

March 14, 2007
– Believers bikers took a day trip with the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA).  We started at Believers and met the CMA crew in Suffolk on Rt. 13. We left there 25 bikes strong.  It was awesome. We left Suffolk, went to Edenton, NC., then to Manteo for a lunch break at a great 50’s diner. Then we made our way to the beach, the local Harley shop, and then came home. We were tired when we got back after 250 miles. I would do it again.

June 2, 2007 – What a great day. In attendance was me (Todd), Reggie, and Pastor Jamey. We left the Breeding Homestead around 11:30am and rode up Rt. 10, crossed the Jamestown Ferry, took the Colonial Parkway, and ended up at the Yorktown Victory Center. The Victory Center was teaming with activity. There were several Biker Groups there already at the local watering hole. The beach, which I didn’t know was there, was covered with all kinds of sun worshipers. There was three mast ship that came right up to the swimming area, tossed up the sails and went with the wind. We got back close to 5pm. The weather was great, even though I picked up a little sun on the right arm only. What’s up with that. The below pic is of Jamey and Reg on the Ferry checking out another three master anchored on the James River. The last two are jut before we split for the afternoon. Taking a pic and operating 2 wheels is pretty difficult. I got the shots though. Hope to see you on the next ride.

July, 2007 - Knotts Island Ferry Run

We had a great ride in July. We started from Church as usual but when we hit 168 south, wow, the traffic was bad. So we hung a left and just reversed the route going through Pungo, then Knotts Island. The scenery was incredible. The roads through Va. Beach were curvy and long. Once we got close to Knotts Island, the road dropped to less than 1 foot above sea level and we were in the wetlands at waters edge cruising at 45 mph. We had to wait for the ferry for about 2 hours (we made a wrong turn that made us miss it) but this just let us talk about bikes, eat some lunch we brought, and just enjoy the piece and quite of the NC country. The ferry ride was nice and long, very relaxing actually! We landed on the other side, made a pit stop at South of the Boarder on 168 and went home. It was a great day.
