Holy What?

Hey Everybody,

This Sunday we start a brand new month (and a new ministry year) with a new series called Empowered where we will be looking at the empowering ministry of the Holy Spirit.  Some call Him the Holy Ghost.

Okay.  I know that there are things about Christianity that are hard to wrap our heads around.  Jesus was born of a virgin.  God became man and showed Himself as Jesus.  Then the God/Man died on a cross.  That’s hard to comprehend, but then there was the resurrection.  If all of that wasn’t hard enough to believe or explain, now we’re going to talk about a Holy Ghost?

Is someone pulling my leg?

I get it.  Some of what we read in the Bible IS hard to wrap our minds around.  But then again, a God who is infinitely stronger, bigger, and the Creator of all…how could we expect to understand all that there is about Him?  He has revealed Himself to us, and yet He is still mysterious in many ways.  He has demonstrated that He is faithful, and yet we often don’t understand what He is up to.  He alone is God and yet He exists as 3 in 1; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

We tend to know quite a bit about Jesus.  We know quite a bit about God the Father, in part because Jesus said if we have seen Him we have seen the Father.  But the Holy Spirit?  He seems to be, as one of Francis Chan’s books is titled, “The Forgotten God.”  Some of us are nervous about the Holy Spirit.  We know He’s there, but we’d rather not talk about Him, for fear that something crazy might happen.  Some of us are just ignorant, in the truest sense of that word, about who the Holy Spirit is.  We simply don’t know.

But if the Holy Spirit is part of the expression of God, and He is called “a Gift” then I want to know and understand more about who He is, and what His role is in my faith.  That is why I’m so excited to start our series this week.  I hope you will make plans to join me this Sunday, in person or online.  Then, be sure to be here on September 12.  My good friend, pastor, and author Nelson Searcy will be joining us to talk about his healing journey.  It will be a powerful Sunday.  Then join us the following Friday, September 17 at 7 PM for a night of prayer and worship.  We will be focusing our prayers on seeking healing.  Physical, spiritual, emotional, and relational healing.  With all the craziness of Covid still going strong, I think some focused prayer around protection and healing would be appropriate.  Don’t you?  I hope you will make plans to be here for all of that.

Know this, I’m praying for you!

Pastor Jamey

P.S.  What is a question YOU have about the Holy Spirit?  Reply to this email and let me know.  If we don’t answer your question during the series, we will be sure to get to it during the Made for Mondays podcast!
