There’s a FREE meal in the app!

A Message from Pastor Jamey

Hey everybody,

If you are like me, you probably have a few restaurant apps on your phone. I just counted them…I have 8 different restaurant apps. I won’t list which ones I have, because I don’t want to be judged by you.  While I don’t use most of them very often, each was initially downloaded because the restaurant offered something free if I would. So, I did. I love FREE! Don’t you?

Every once in a while one of the restaurant apps that I use will send me a notification that they have loaded something free into my app.  When that happens, it feels a little like Christmas morning. 9 times out of 10, when I get that notification in the app, I find myself in the drive-through of that restaurant collecting my FREE food item…and usually a couple of items I paid for too.  (I think that’s their plan, right?)

I don’t really NEED free food.  If anything, I probably need LESS food, because I usually pack on about 10 unwanted pounds during this time of year. Even though that is true, free food makes me happy.

While I don’t need free food, there are many in our community that are struggling to put enough food on the table for their families.   According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, some 18 million adults (or 8.8% of the adult population) said their households didn’t get enough to eat “sometimes or often” in the last seven days.  Families with children are struggling even more.  11% of adults in households with children reported that their household “sometimes or often didn’t get enough to eat” in the last 7 days.  In fact, the number of children who didn’t get enough to each at any point in the last 30 days has grown from 1.1 million children in 2019 to 8.8 million children today! That means it is very likely that when you go to the grocery store you pass quite a few people that are struggling to make the most of the dollars that they have to provide food for their families.

This brings me to the point of this article. Believers wants to come alongside these families that are struggling with food insecurities or are struggling to make ends meet, in Jesus name and help them in their place of need.  Each year, Believers has a year-end offering push that we call “The Gift” and it is intended to bless our community in some tangible way. This year, Believers will bless our community with $50,000 of FREE groceries! If a free sandwich or free French fry makes me happy, imagine what joy a family would experience if they received $100 in free groceries!!  We are excited to bless our community in this practical way and to remind them that God loves them, and so do we!  We are calling this the “Grocery Buy Down” where we will pay down the grocery purchase of families throughout our community.

You can help us reach our goal of $50,000 by giving to “The Gift” from our website, the Believers Church App, or during a Sunday Service. We will be accepting donations to The Gift throughout the month of December and plan to do the Grocery Buy Down early in January.  When you give to The Gift, you are basically providing Free meals through the Believers Church App!

Thanks for your generosity. I’m excited to see what God does through us in the new year!  Join us this Sunday as we continue our Christmas series “The Gift Exchange.” This week we will learn how to exchange our hurts for God’s healing.
