Before You Grow Spiritually, Pack These 3 Things

My annual "motorcycle sabbatical" is quickly approaching, and I’ve been spending a lot of time getting ready for the ride. I’m headed to Alaska—and with a trip like this, preparedness is key.

Can you imagine setting out on a 9,000-mile journey with no route, no packed gear, no idea where you’d sleep or what to do if things go wrong? That lack of preparation wouldn’t just be unwise—it could be dangerous.

And yet, I think many of us approach our spiritual journey the same way. We say we want to become more like Jesus, but we haven’t made a plan to get there. We hope to grow, love others well, and make a difference—but hope without a plan rarely takes us where we want to go.

So let me encourage you to create a spiritual plan. Here are three essentials I’d pack for the road ahead:

1. Time with Jesus – Whether it’s prayer, Scripture, journaling, or stillness, make space each day to hear His voice. I’ve recently started using the Lectio 365 app and highly recommend it as a great way to connect with Jesus throughout the day.

2. Community – Don’t walk this road alone. Join a church small group, build friendships, and surround yourself with people who help you follow Jesus more closely.

3. Serving – Nothing grows our faith like stepping out to serve. Find ways to use your gifts in the church or with a local organization. Serving helps us become more like Jesus.

Let’s travel with purpose, not aimlessly. Let’s become more like Him.

P.S. What would you add to your spiritual packing list?
