Who is the G.O.A.T?

A Message from Pastor Jamey

Hey Everybody,

This Sunday, we are starting a new series called "The G.O.A.T." You know what that stands for, right? The Greatest of All Time. Usually, when people use this term, they talk about a sports figure. What's kind of interesting to me is that the G.O.A.T. is rarely the Greatest Of All Time and usually more of the Greatest For A Time, which doesn't spell GOAT, but G.F.A.T., which isn't nearly as catchy. Like, there was a time when Larry Bird may have been considered the G.O.A.T. in the N.B.A. Then, Michael Jordan comes along, and he is the G.O.A.T. But many believe that Lebron James is the G.O.A.T. now. Well, by definition, none of them are the G.O.A.T. because it changes over time.

But there is One who has stood the test of time. No one has shaped the world more than Jesus; His influence continues today. Think about some of the ways Jesus has influenced the world:

-Legal and Political Thought.

The concepts of justice, equality, and human rights found in Jesus' teachings have influenced legal and political thought for centuries. The idea that all individuals have inherent worth, and dignity originates in Jesus's teachings and actions.

-Humanitarian Efforts.

Jesus' emphasis on compassion and care for the marginalized has inspired countless humanitarian and charitable initiatives. Hospitals and Orphanages can both find their origins in those who were influenced by the teachings of Jesus.

-Education and Literacy

The establishment of schools and universities, inspired by Christian principles, has played a significant role in the development of education globally. Many early educational institutions were founded by Christian groups to provide education to promote intellectual and moral development.

-Art and Literature.

The life of Jesus has been a major theme in art, literature, and music for centuries. Countless paintings, sculptures, novels, poems, and musical compositions have been inspired by biblical stories and Christian themes, contributing to the enrichment of culture globally.

-Calendar and Holidays.

The Christian calendar, with its central events such as Christmas and Easter, has influenced how time is measured and celebrated in many parts of the world. These holidays have become cultural touchstones, even for those who don't identify as Christians.

-Ethics and Morality.

Jesus' teachings, including the Sermon on the Mount, have profoundly influenced ethical and moral principles worldwide. Concepts such as love, forgiveness, compassion, and the Golden Rule continue to shape moral reasoning and ethical behavior.

No one will come along and surpass Jesus in any of these ways. He is the Greatest of All Time. And what is really remarkable is that the Greatest of All Time came to serve humankind. Jesus said of himself (and it's our theme verse for 2024):

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. Matthew 20:28

The Greatest of All Time came to serve and give his life. He invites us to participate in greatness by giving ourselves away in service to others. That's what our series that is starting this Sunday is all about. Please join me in pursuing greatness!

Blessings,
Pastor Jamey
